Georgeanne Gaffney’s work is rooted in a quiet reverence for the natural world and the intimate, often fleeting moments that shape our lives. Living and working in the Adirondacks, she draws continual inspiration from its shifting light, seasonal rhythms, and atmospheric beauty—elements that inform both the mood and narrative of her paintings.
Her fine art is collected nationally and exhibited in galleries and boutiques. Her painting Summer’s Ending, which portrays a woman in the final days of pregnancy standing in a lush garden of hollyhocks, was acquired by the Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake for its permanent collection.
Working from her own photography, Georgeanne begins with close observation—capturing gesture, light, and subtle emotional undercurrents. She paints in acrylic, oil, encaustic, pastels and watercolors, building surfaces through multiple layers of paint and glazes rich in color and texture. Between each stage, she sands back into the work, revealing fragments of earlier marks and tones. This process of layering and deconstruction creates a sense of depth and history, where each piece carries a visual narrative beneath its surface. The resulting paintings possess a softened, atmospheric quality—timeless and slightly out of reach—where memory and presence converge.
Her subjects often explore the figure within nature, with a focus on women in moments of transition, reflection, and quiet strength. Rivers, lakes and wild landscapes become contemplative spaces, inviting dialogue about growth, vulnerability, and our connection to the natural world. Color plays a central role in her work, used intuitively to evoke mood, atmosphere, and the passage of time. Subtle shifts in tone and dappled light encourage a slower, more reflective viewing experience.
Georgeanne accepts commissions, creating heirloom pieces designed to be passed down through generations.
In addition to her studio practice, she is an expert color consultant with over 30 years of experience, collaborating with designers, architects, and clients on residential and commercial spaces. Her interior designs begin with a bespoke color and design narrative, combining texture, tone, and material to create cohesive, elevated environments that feel both intentional and deeply personal.
Her studio is located in the historic former general store, Norman’s, in Bloomingdale, New York, which she shares with her husband, Peter, a skilled woodworker. Together, they curate a charming retail space featuring ceramics, jewelry, home goods, and vintage clothing by fellow artists and makers—an extension of their shared commitment to craftsmanship and community.
Originally from Maryland, Georgeanne holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Towson University. She now resides in Saranac Lake, where the landscape continues to ground and inspire her work.
